How Many Rock Lights Do You Actually Need?
This is the question we get more than any other, and most answers online are useless because they ignore the two things that actually decide it: the size of your truck and whether you want light under it or light on it.
Start with the wheel wells
Four pods, one per wheel well, is the baseline. It is also the setup most people picture when they imagine rock lights: a clean glow at each corner, visible from the side, no dark gaps between the tyres. On a standard cab or a mid-size truck, four does the job properly.
If you only ever buy four, buy them for the wheel wells. It is the placement that reads best in photos and the one that actually helps when you are working around the truck at night.
Eight is where most builds land
Eight pods lets you keep one per wheel well and add four along the frame rails, which fills the dark stretch between front and rear wheels. On a crew cab that middle gap is long, and four pods alone leave it obvious.
Eight is the most common set we ship, and for a full-size crew cab it is the honest recommendation.
Twelve and up: when you are lighting the whole underbody
- Twelve — wheel wells, frame rails, plus the front and rear bumper areas. This is the point where the truck reads as fully lit rather than as having lights on it.
- Sixteen to twenty — long-bed and dually builds, or anyone adding bed rail, tailgate and engine bay lighting. Above twelve you are no longer filling gaps, you are choosing to light specific features.
Pod size matters as much as pod count
A 9 LED pod and a 36 LED pod both mount in the same places, but they do different jobs. Nine LEDs is the everyday choice — enough to light a wheel well cleanly without washing out. Thirty-six is a substantially brighter pod for people who want the underbody genuinely lit rather than accented.
A practical rule: more small pods beat fewer large ones for evenness, and fewer large pods beat more small ones for outright brightness. If you cannot decide, eight 9 LED pods will please more people than four 36 LED pods.
Before you order
- Count your mounting points first. Walk the truck with a torch and find the flat, protected spots. That number is your real answer.
- Decide bolt or magnet. Every pod includes bolt hardware; magnetic mounts let you reposition without drilling. Our mounting guide covers the trade-off.
- Add the harness. Pods do not come with wiring — one harness runs the whole set off a single switch.
