A Truck Light Stopped Working: What to Check, in Order

Something on the truck has stopped lighting up. Before you start pulling brackets off, it is worth knowing that the light itself is rarely the part that failed. On almost every set we see, the fault is in the wire, the connector or the shared end of the circuit, and each of those is a different job with a different fix.

This is the order we would check things in, and why. It applies to rock lights, wheel lights, valance strips and trac bar lights, because they all run back to the same harness.

Work out which failure you have first

Four symptoms, four different places to look. Naming yours before you touch anything saves most of the afternoon.

  • Nothing comes on at all. The fault is at the shared end: the harness, the fuse or the battery connection.
  • One light is out and the rest are fine. The fault is that light or the lead feeding it.
  • It flickers or drops out over bumps. The fault is mechanical, not electrical.
  • It went wrong after a wash or a water crossing. The fault is almost always a connector.

Work the symptom, not the light. A dead light with a good connection and a dead connection with a good light look identical from the outside, and only one of them is a warranty matter.

Nothing comes on at all

Start at the harness and work outward, because a whole set going dark at once points at the part they all share.

The wiring harness ships with a relay, a switch and a fuse, and the fuse is the first thing to look at. It is there to fail before anything expensive does, so a blown one is the system working rather than the system broken. Replace it, then find out why: a fuse that goes again immediately is telling you there is a short in a run, usually where a wire has worn through against something.

Next, the battery connections. They are the last thing you connect during an install and the first thing to loosen or corrode afterward. Then the remote, which is the cheapest thing to rule out and the one people check last. If the remote is the only variable that changed, establish that before you get under the truck.

One light is out and the rest are fine

This is the common one, and there is a test that settles it in five minutes without any tools.

Unplug the dead light and plug it into a lead you know is working, one that is currently running a light. If it lights up, the light is fine and the fault is in the wire or connector that was feeding it. If it stays dark on a known good lead, the light itself has failed. That single swap tells you which of the two jobs you have, and it is the first thing we will ask you to do if you contact us.

If the light is fine, look at the connector it was on. Water sitting in a connector, a pin that was never fully seated, or corrosion working on the terminals will all produce exactly this. Grease every connector before you seat it, on the repair as well as on the original install.

It flickers, or drops out over bumps

Intermittent faults that follow the road surface are mechanical. Something is moving that should not be, and the electrical symptom is downstream of that.

Check the mounting first. A bracket that was never fully tightened lets the light shift, and a light that shifts works its own lead until something inside gives. On magnetic mounts the instruction is Loctite rather than torque: apply it for a firm hold and do not over-tighten the magnets, with the lock nuts there for extra security.

Then check the wire at every point where two parts of the truck move relative to each other. The frame to body transition is the classic one. A wire that is exactly long enough at ride height is short at full suspension travel, and it spends months rubbing before it finally opens up. On wheel lights, slack for full steering and suspension movement is a condition of the warranty rather than a suggestion.

It went wrong after a wash or a water crossing

Look at the connectors, not the lights. Every rock light we sell is IP68, and on a rock light that rating means fully submersible rather than splash resistant, so still water is not what gets in. A pressure washer is different: that is moving water aimed at a seam, and the connectors are the part of the system that was never tested for it. Keep the wand back and off the connections.

If the set went odd right after a wash, give it a day to dry before you conclude anything, then pull each connector in the affected run and look for water or green on the pins. Salt is worse than water and works slowly, so a set that has been through a winter deserves the same look even if nothing has failed yet.

When the light itself has failed

Sometimes the swap test says the light is dead, and that is a straightforward answer. Replacement parts exist for the wheel light range specifically, so a failed strip does not mean a new kit.

Replacement strips are sold per row configuration, starting at $45 for the double row standard, $75 for double row high intensity and $95 for the quad row switchback. Availability moves between variants, so check the page for what is in stock rather than assuming. Replacement brackets are $35 in stainless steel with pre-drilled holes, and they are also what you want if you are moving an older set onto new wheels.

Lens hazing is the honest exception. On a truck that sees heavy road use it happens, it is cosmetic wear rather than a fault, and our warranty page lists it as not covered rather than pretending otherwise.

What the warranty covers, and what it needs from you

Most of the range carries a limited lifetime warranty. Wheel lights and wiring harnesses carry six months of coverage from the date of purchase, which is shorter than everything else and set out on the warranty page.

Limited means faults. It does not cover collision, abrasion or deliberate misuse, an install that ignored the instructions, or cosmetic wear. Two wheel light install steps are conditions rather than advice: use the supplied nuts and bolts, and leave slack in the wiring for full steering and suspension movement. Either one ignored voids the cover.

The part people get caught by is registration. You register within 30 days of your order date at warranty registration, using your order number, your contact details and photos of the lights on the vehicle. A registration number is issued as soon as you submit, and a claim cannot be filed without it. There is one registration per order, so do it when the truck is finished rather than when something breaks. Claims go through the warranty claim page.

The parts that turn this into a short job

Most repairs come down to a length of wire and a connector done properly. The 50 foot two conductor spool is $35 and is enough to redo a run rather than splice a patch into the middle of a damaged one, which is what we would do.

Wheel light extension wires come as two 10 foot extensions for the fronts and two 20 foot for the rears, plug and play with no hardwiring, and availability moves between the colour options. If the original run was hardwired and it is the run that failed, this is the moment to convert it.
