Rock Lights for a Ford F-150: What the Aluminium Body Changes

Search for rock lights for a Ford F-150 and you will find listings with a Ford badge on them and very little about what is actually different on this truck. The hardware is not different. One thing about the truck is, and it changes the mounting decision rather than the parts: from the 2015 model year onward the F-150 uses aluminium alloy body panels and an aluminium bed. Magnetic mounts hold on steel. That one fact reorganises the whole job, and it is the reason this guide exists separately from the others.
Do rock lights fit an F-150
Yes, and it is worth understanding why rather than taking it on trust. A rock light is a small sealed housing with a mounting tab. It does not bolt into a factory hole and it does not plug into a factory connector. It mounts to whatever surface you choose and it wires back to a harness you route yourself.
So there is no part number per truck and there never was. What you are actually deciding is how many rock lights to run, what you are attaching them to, and where the wire goes. On an F-150 the middle one of those three is the interesting question. If you are on a different half ton, the equivalent piece is rock lights for a Ram 1500.
The aluminium body is the difference that matters
Magnets hold on steel. They do not hold on aluminium, and they do not hold on the plastic liners either. On a truck with a steel body you can put a magnetic mount almost anywhere flat and clean and it will stay. On a 2015 or newer F-150, half the flat clean surfaces under the truck are aluminium or plastic, and a magnet placed on one of them will sit there looking convincing right up until the first speed bump.
This is not a reason to avoid magnetic mounts on an F-150. It is a reason to work out where you are putting them before you order rather than after. There is a two minute version of this: take a fridge magnet out to the truck, get underneath, and touch it to every surface you had in mind. What holds is steel. What does not is your answer.
Where the steel actually is
The frame is steel, and so are the crossmembers that run between the rails. So is the suspension: the arms, the brackets and the axle housing at the back. Those are the surfaces a magnetic mount is happy on, and they happen to be structural, which is what you want anyway.
The body panels, the bed floor and the bed sides are the aluminium. The wheel arch liners are plastic. None of those three are magnet surfaces, and two of them are not really bolt surfaces either.
That leads to the other half of the rule. If you are drilling, drill steel. Putting steel hardware through an aluminium panel on a truck that sees winter road salt is a corrosion problem you have made for yourself, and the frame rail is right there and better in every way. Mount to structure, not to skin.
How many rock lights for your cab and bed
The F-150 has the widest configuration spread of any truck we get asked about. A regular cab with a short bed and a SuperCrew with the eight foot bed are very different lengths of vehicle, and the count that looks right on one looks sparse on the other.
Four rock lights cover the wheel wells, one per corner. That is the minimum that reads as deliberate rather than half finished, and on a shorter configuration it is enough. Eight adds a run along the frame rails between the wheels, and eight is where most F-150 owners land, because the dark stretch along the side of the truck is exactly what the extra four fill in.
Twelve to twenty lights the full underbody. If you have the six and a half or eight foot bed, this is the range where a third run under the bed starts to make sense, because the area behind the rear wheels is a long way from anything the first eight are lighting. Mounting: bolts, magnets, or both while you decide
Bolt on is permanent, and on a truck that works it is the right answer. You drill once into the frame, the hardware is in the box, and the rock light is not moving again.
Magnetic mounts start at $19.99 for a set of four, which covers four rock lights, and each mount carries two magnets, so a set of four is eight magnets in total. The set includes countersunk screws, lock nuts and washers. They suit a truck you do not want to drill, and on an F-150 they suit the frame and suspension positions specifically.
The mixed approach is the one we would actually recommend here. Run magnets on the steel while you live with the placement for a few weeks, then bolt whatever you decide to keep. It costs you nothing extra, because the bolt hardware ships with the rock lights either way. Surface prep matters more than people expect: a magnet on a rail caked in road film is holding on grime, not steel. Watch the running boards when you route the wire
Higher F-150 trims can be fitted with power deployable running boards. That is a powered assembly bolted under the rocker, in exactly the place people like to run wire along, and it swings every time a door opens.
If your truck has them, route above or inboard of the mechanism, secure the run on both sides of it, and cycle the boards several times with the wire in place before you cut a single zip tie short. A wire that clears the board at rest and catches it at full swing will not announce itself until something has already worn through.
The general rules apply as well: away from exhaust heat, away from steering and suspension pinch points, and slack left at the frame to body transition, because the body moves on its mounts and a wire pulled tight across that gap will fail eventually. Which pod size to run
Three sizes are in the range. A set of four 9 LED rock lights is $54 and is the compact option for tight positions. A set of four 24 LED is $120 and is where most full size truck builds land. A set of four 36 LED is $180 for the largest housing we make.
On a truck this size the clearance argument is weaker than it is on a smaller vehicle, so the choice comes down to how much of the underbody you are lighting and how far apart the rock lights will sit. Spread them further and the larger housing earns its place. The three are compared in 9, 24 or 36 LED.
Switching, and what usually ends a set
The 30A harness at $55 includes the relay, switch and fuse, and its wireless remote handles on and off plus six strobe options. One harness covers a set of rock lights, a set of wheel lights, or both on one vehicle, so mount it once and route later additions back to it. The wireless remote also means no hole in a modern F-150 dash, which is a decision you cannot walk back.

Before you order
Settle four things, in this order. Count first, driven by your cab and bed. Mounting second, decided by the magnet test under your own truck rather than by what worked on someone else's. Pod size third. Wire last, measured along the route you have actually chosen.
