How Many Rock Lights Do I Need? A Pod Count Guide for Trucks
It is the single most common question we get, and the honest answer is that it depends on one thing: whether you want the truck outlined or genuinely lit. Those are different goals and they need different pod counts.
Start with what you want the light to do
Rock lights began as an off-road tool. The point was to see obstacles beside the tires at night without lighting up the whole trail. Most people buying them today want something different - they want the truck to look good sitting still. Both are valid, and they lead to different answers.
Four pods: the wheel wells
One pod per wheel well is the entry point. You get a glow at each corner and light on the ground beside the tires. It is genuinely useful for changing a tire at night and it reads as a subtle mod rather than a statement.
Four is also the right count if you are testing the water. Every pod size we sell comes in a set of four, and adding a second set later is straightforward as long as you buy the same LED count so the color and output match.
Eight pods: wheel wells plus frame rails
This is the most popular configuration we ship. Four in the wells, four spaced along the frame rails, and the gaps between the corners fill in. The truck stops looking like it has four glowing spots and starts looking like it has a lit underside.
Twelve to twenty pods: full underbody
Twelve gets you continuous coverage on a standard cab. Sixteen and twenty are for crew cabs, long beds and anyone who wants light spilling evenly out all four sides with no dark patches. If you have seen a truck at a show where the ground underneath looks like one solid sheet of light, that is a sixteen or twenty pod install.
Pod size changes the math
Count is only half the equation. A 9 LED pod and a 160 LED pod are different tools:
- 9 LED - small housing, fits places bigger pods will not. Good for tight wheel wells, grille pods and filling gaps in an existing install.
- 24 and 36 LED - the practical middle. Enough output to light ground properly on a stock-height truck without being obnoxious.
- 90 and 108 LED - built for lifted trucks. The further a pod sits from the ground, the more the light spreads out and the dimmer it lands, so lift height genuinely matters here.
- 128 and 160 LED - maximum output. Eight 160 LED pods carry 1,280 LEDs against 180 in twenty 9 LED pods, and cost less to wire.
A useful rule: if your truck is lifted more than about four inches, size up before you count up. More small pods spread thin light over a wider area. Fewer large pods put more light where you actually want it.
Standard or magnetic mounting
Standard mounting means drilling the frame. It is permanent, it is the strongest option, and it is what most people choose for a long-term build.
Magnetic mounts use two magnets per pod, so a set of four pods needs eight magnets. They hold on any steel surface, survive highway speeds, and - the part people underestimate - they let you move pods after you have seen the truck lit at night. Almost everyone repositions at least one pod after the first evening. Doing that with drilled mounts means new holes.
Magnets are also the right call if you lease the truck, plan to sell it, or simply do not want holes in your frame.
A word on waterproofing
Rock lights live in the worst environment on a vehicle: road salt, standing water, pressure washing, mud. Every Southern Lumen pod is rated IP68, which means fully submersible rather than merely splash resistant. That distinction is where most budget pods fail - they survive rain and die the first time the truck goes through standing water.

If you are unsure, buy eight pods in the 24 or 36 LED range with magnetic mounts. It is enough light to look deliberate rather than accidental, the magnets let you experiment with placement, and it leaves room to add a second set later without a color mismatch.
