The Wiring Harness and Wireless Remote, Explained
Every light we sell needs power and a way to switch it on. That is what the wiring harness and wireless remote do. The lights get the attention, but the harness is the part that decides whether the install is a clean afternoon or a mess of guesswork under the dash. Here is what it is, what the remote adds, and when you need one.
What the harness actually is
The wiring harness with wireless remote is the loom that ties your lights to the truck battery and gives you a switch to run them. One end lands on the battery, the run carries power back to wherever your lights are, and a small receiver sits in the middle so a key fob can turn the set on and off. It replaces the alternative, which is splicing into a random circuit and hoping it holds. With the harness the power path is one clean run you built on purpose.
Why the remote beats a dash switch
A hardwired toggle means drilling the dash, fishing a wire through the firewall, and picking a spot you are stuck with. The wireless remote skips all of that. The receiver lives near the battery with the rest of the harness, and the fob rides on your keychain. You turn the lights on from outside the truck, which is the only place you can actually see them, and you are not staring at a switch you cut into a panel you liked better before. For most people this is the reason to run the harness at all.
Do you need it
Some of our lights are plug and play and some are not, and the harness is how the ones that are not get powered without cutting into the truck. Our rock lights are hardwired by design, so a harness gives them a tidy switched feed instead of a splice. The universal accessories lean on it too. Reaching the lights: wire and length
The harness gets power to a point. Getting it the rest of the way to the light is a question of wire. A rock light set at the back of the frame is a long way from the battery, and running short leaves you splicing in the worst possible spot. Our 50ft encased 2 pin 16 gauge wire is the extra length for exactly that, encased so it survives the underside of a truck. Installing the harness
The harness is the friendly part of any lighting install. Battery terminals, a ground, a clean run back to the lights, and the receiver tucked somewhere dry. No brakes come apart and nothing structural gets touched. If you have run a set of driving lights before, this is the same skill. When a light will not turn on
Nine times out of ten a light that will not come on is a power problem, not a dead light, and the harness is where you start looking. A loose ground, a fob that needs pairing again, a connector that did not click all the way home. Before you assume a strip failed, walk the harness back to the battery. The short version
Buy the lights for the look. Buy the harness so the look actually turns on without cutting up your truck. One harness runs a full set, the remote puts the switch on your keychain instead of your dash, and the right length of wire keeps you from splicing where you should not. It is the least exciting thing in the cart and the one that decides how the whole install goes.
