Switchback Turn Signals and the Startup Animation, Explained
Switchback is one of those words that turns up in a product title and never gets explained. It is not a brand and it is not a single color. It means two colors living in the same strip, white and amber, and being able to run one or hand the strip over to the other. Here is what that actually looks like, and which of our lights do the full trick with a startup animation and a working turn signal.
What switchback means
A switchback strip carries white and amber in the same run of LEDs, so one light does two jobs and you never mount a second set of strips for the second color. Run white as your everyday look, then call up the amber when you want it. That is the entire idea, and it is what separates a switchback strip from a plain white one. Dual-chip versus quad-row
There are two ways to build it. On the dual-chip switchback wheel lights every chip holds both colors, so when it changes the whole face of the strip changes at once instead of every other row lighting up. On the quad-row switchback the colors live in separate rows, two white and two amber, and the ring is adjustable so you size it to your own wheel. The startup animation
Power the truck on and the switchback trac bar does not just snap to white. It is the part people notice in a parking lot before they know what they are looking at, and it is the clearest sign a strip is doing something more than turning on and off.
Sequential turn signals
The feature that earns the name is on the switchback trac bar lights. They run pure white for everyday driving, and when you hit the blinker the amber sweeps in sequence, the chasing signal the newer trucks use, then hands the strip back to white once the turn is done. One run of light gives you a running light and a turn signal, which is the whole point of switchback. Getting switchback on your wheels
The trac bar is the easy install: zip ties, about an hour, and nothing comes off the truck. The wheel version is a different job, and this is the part nobody selling these likes to say out loud. Mounting a wheel light means the caliper and rotor come off the hub, because the light's ring sits behind them, so the brake has to be apart to do it. On most trucks the dust shield also gets drilled to pass the wire through. It is a reason to know what the afternoon looks like before you start.
Which switchback is for you
If you want the animation and a working turn signal with an install you can do in the driveway, the trac bar switchback is the answer, and it is the cheaper light besides. If you want the ring of color around the wheel and you are willing to pull the brakes to get it, the switchback wheel lights are the look, dual-chip for the cleanest color change and quad-row for the price. Decide the install you are willing to do first, then pick the light, because the mounting is the part that actually differs between them.
Both give you white and amber in one strip. Only one of them signals a turn, and it is the one you can put on in an afternoon.
