48 LED Rock Lights: The Step Up From the 36

Our rock light sizing guide walks the 9, 24 and 36 LED, the three sizes most trucks end up running. The 48 LED came after that guide was written, and it answers one specific question: what do you buy when the 36 is close but you want a little more, and you are not ready to jump to the big high-output housings. This is where the 48 sits, and who it is for.

Where the 48 lands in the lineup

The 48 is the largest of the compact rock lights. It puts out more than the 36 in a housing that still bolts into a wheel well without any fuss, which is the whole point of it. Above the 48 are the big high-output sizes, and those are a different install on a different kind of build. The 48 is the ceiling of the easy bolt-on lights, the last step before the housings get large.

More LEDs in the same style of housing means more output. That is the honest version of the claim, and it is the only version you will get from us, for a reason we come back to at the end.

How many you actually need

Size is one decision and count is the other, and people mix them up. Four rock lights cover the wheel wells and nothing else. Eight is the common setup, the four wells plus the frame rails, and it is what most trucks look best running. The short version is that the 48 comes in sets from four to twenty, so you match the set to the truck rather than the other way around.

Bolt-on or magnetic

Every 48 LED set ships with two bolts and nuts per light, so the default is a bolt-on. Drill a small hole, run the bolt, and it never moves again. If you would rather not put a hole in the frame, the same set is offered with magnetic mounts, which hold the light with heavy-duty magnets and leave the frame untouched. That trade is the whole subject of magnetic versus bolt-on mounting, and it comes down to whether you want permanence or the option to move them later. Both hold. Neither is the wrong answer, and the 48 is offered either way so you are not boxed in.

What IP68 buys you

The 48 is IP68, the same seal every rock light we build carries. That rating means fully submersible, not splash resistant, so mud, rain, dust and a flooded parking lot are all the same to it. This is not the place to save money on a lesser seal, because the way a cheap light dies is water finding the solder points, and the sealing rating is the one number on the page that is actually measured and worth reading.

The 48 against the 36 and the 24

The 24 is the light most people should start with, enough output to read as a real lighting job without lighting up the whole block. The 36 is the middle, more presence under a lifted truck or bigger tires. The 48 is for the buyer who looked at the 36 and wanted the next thing, or who runs wells deep enough that the extra output fills them properly. None of these is a step down in quality from the next. They are coverage decisions. If you are torn between two sizes, the larger one very rarely comes back for being too much.

The number you will not find

You will notice there is no brightness figure anywhere on the 48, no measured output and nothing claiming it beats the 36 by some factor. That is on purpose. We have not put these on a photometer, so we do not print a number we cannot stand behind, and the same refusal covers our color claims, which we get into in what pure white actually means. More LEDs put out more light. Past that, judge it on the ground under your own truck, which is the only test that counts.
